One in four adults will experience some form of mental illness in any given year. One in 17 lives with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or some other serious mental illness. Unsurprisingly, the stigma still attached to mental illness is the most common reason they are often untreated. Ben Brafman, CEO and Founder of Destination Hope, LLC has been working to remove the stigma. Brafman says that as he worked his way up from mental health tech to clinical director he “saw what was lacking for patients and how they were being treated.”
Based on his experience, he founded Destination Hope and pioneered a men’s treatment program. Brafman says “there are several difficulties finding a good treatment center” and suggests resources for local services. Reducing the stigma may be as simple as having a conversation. Whether with a former patient, family member, or friend, conversation helps break down barriers and lets people know they do not need to carry their burdens alone.
