Advances in Hepatitis Treatment Save Countless Lives

Hepatitis treatment has advanced considerably over the years. According to Lucinda K. Porter, a nurse who authored “Free from Hepatitis C,” this disease is “preventable, manageable and curable.” With the month of May serving as Hepatitis Awareness Month, we wanted to take some time to join the cause of getting more knowledge and information about hepatitis out to the masses, as millions of Americans are currently afflicted with the illness and the majority are completely unaware of it. Dual Diagnosis: The Hard Road of Substance Abuse and Mental Illness

Dual diagnosis is defined as an individual that suffers from both an alcohol or drug problem as well as an emotional or psychiatric problem. Dual diagnosis is probably a lot more common than the general public realizes. It is estimated that 37 percent of alcohol abusers also suffer from at least one mental health disorder. It is because of circumstances like this that a United States Senate panel recently decided to launch an investigation into three of the largest drug companies, including the makers of OxyContin and Vicodin. “It is clear that the United States is suffering from an epidemic of accidental death and drug addiction resulting from increased use of powerful narcotic painkillers,” said Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Max Baucus (D-Mont) in a joint statement. Continue reading

Prescription Drug Abuse Dispensing Rates Slow in Florida Thanks to Pill Mill Crackdown

Prescription drug abuse has been synonymous with the state of Florida since the abuse rates started to balloon over a decade ago. While these rates still feel incredibly high to many residents of the Sunshine State, there is a silver lining in the drastic reduction of the number of these dangerous prescriptions being dispensed by doctors. Thanks to the aptly named “pill mill legislation” which was approved on the final day of sessions in 2011, a staggering 97 percent drop in the physical number of oxycodone pills prescribed has allowed Florida to slowly distance itself from its poster child image as the epicenter of prescription drug abuse in the United States.
